We had to special order the goslings. Rural King has straight run chicks for sale every spring. This is how we bought our chickens. They put several inches of pine shavings into galvanized water troughs with heat lamps to keep the hundreds of day old chicks for sale. The chicks always sell out for the most part, but there is no such demand for goslings. However, RK will special order them for customers from the same hatchery. I had always liked geese and since we are now living on the farm, it was time to bring some home!
After flipping through the hatchery catalog, I settled on two African geese and three Toulouse. There is a minimum order of five which is actually more than I wanted. When we picked them up, two of the goslings had a blue dye mark on their heads. I assume that these are marking the Africans.
I think they make such a pretty picture in this blue plastic tub!
Their home for now will be the same ol' galvanized trough that we used to brood the chicks. They have a heat lamp, a thick layer of wood shavings lining the floor and non-medicated chick feed and water. I have also made them a pen so they can safely browse on the green grass during the day.
